Caesaraugusta Roman Theatre

The Roman Theatre of Saragossa is part of the Césaraugusta route, which also includes the Forum, the Baths and the River Port, and is an important archaeological site that reveals the Roman presence. in the city.
This theatre was built during the 1st century AD. in the ancient Roman colony of Caesaraugusta. The theatre had a capacity for around 6,000 spectators and was used for various artistic performances and public events, such as plays, music and dance competitions, and political meetings.
Its construction began in the time of Tiberius and continued until the empire of Claudius. The theatre remains until the 20th century. III AD, part of its materials were used in the growth of the wall and in the foundations of Islamic, Christian and Jewish homes.
During the Middle Ages, the theatre was buried under different constructions and buildings that were superimposed over time. It was not until the 20th century when excavations began to be carried out that allowed this ancient Roman theatre to be rediscovered and restored.
It was rediscovered in 1972 and the Museum was inaugurated in 2003, although archaeological and research work continues.
In addition, the Caesaraugusta Theatre is visible in its entirety without the need to access the museum grounds. It can be seen from the streets that surround the perimeter of the theatre, Calles Verónica and Pedro Joaquín Soler, and from the viewpoint on Calle San Jorge next to the museum entrance.
When visiting the Museum, visitors can tour the old stands, observe the remains of the stage, the caves and other architectural elements that are still preserved, along with the 25 m high cover that protects it that recreates the original height of the building.
In addition, the site has an interpretation centre that provides detailed information about the history of theatre and life in ancient Roman Saragossa.
