The Expo Zone

The Saragossa Expo Zone, also known as the Saragossa International Exhibition 2008, had water and sustainable development as its central theme, and brought together participants from all over the world to explore and debate issues related to water, ecology and sustainability.

During the Expo, several pavilions and exhibition areas were built to host presentations from different countries and organizations. Each pavilion featured a unique interpretation of the theme of water and how it affects society and the environment.

After the Expo, part of the facilities and pavilions were reused and incorporated into the urban development of Saragossa.

The Saragossa 2008 Expo Zone left a legacy in terms of sustainable architecture, urban development and awareness of the importance of water and sustainability.

The Bridge Pavilion

The Bridge Pavilion, also known as the Third Millennium Bridge, designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, is one of the Expo’s most notable architectural legacies.

The Bridge Pavilion is known for its bold and futuristic architectural design. Its sinuous and curvilinear design is an example of parametric architecture, which uses algorithms and software to generate complex shapes.

The Bridge Pavilion extends over the Ebro River, connecting both banks and creating a new pedestrian and transport crossing.

The Bridge Pavilion was constructed primarily of steel and glass, allowing the curved and organic forms of the design to be realized.

After the Expo, the Puente Pavilion became a permanent element of the urban landscape of Saragossa, and houses the Technological Museum of Mobility. An exhibition about the mobility of the future and sustainable.

The Water Tower

The Water Tower was designed to be a symbol of the exhibition and a visual representation of the focus on the vital resource of water.

The Water Tower is characterized by its unique and futuristic design. It was designed by architect Enrique de Teresa and its structure resembles a giant drop of water rising from the ground.

The tower has a height of approximately 76 meters (249 ft) and is made of steel and glass.

The Water Tower served as the main water tank for the Expo Saragossa 2008 site, supplying water to the different thematic areas and pavilions.

Although originally conceived as a temporary structure, after the exhibition the tower remained and remains a landmark and tourist attraction in the city. Additionally, it has been used for various cultural events and activities over the years.

The Congress Palace

The Congress Palace was another of the notable buildings erected during the Saragossa 2008 International Exhibition. This space was designed to host events, conferences and activities related to the Expo, and has continued to be used for various functions since then.

The Congress Palace was designed by architect Patxi Mangado, a Spanish architect known for his focus on integrating architecture with environment and function. The building is characterized by modern and geometric lines, and its design adapts to the principles of sustainability and energy efficiency.

The design of the Conference Center incorporated sustainable and ecological elements, such as the use of eco-friendly materials and energy efficient technologies.

During Expo Saragossa 2008, the Conference Center served as a space for holding conferences, talks, presentations and events related to the topic of water and sustainable development.

After the Expo, the Congress Palace continued to be used as a space for holding events and activities.

The Sculpture of the Soul of the Ebro

The Sculpture of the Soul of the Ebro, designed by artist Jaume Plensa, is one of the Expo’s most memorable artistic contributions and captures the essence and relationship of Saragossa with the Ebro River.

The sculpture consists of a set of suspended alphabetical letters that form a human figure. The letters are arranged in a way that they appear to float and create an ethereal and spiritual figure. The design symbolizes the “soul” of the Ebro River, evoking the connection between the river and the identity of Saragossa.

The sculpture is made of stainless steel.

The sculpture is not only impressive to see from afar, but also invites visitors to interact with it from different angles and perspectives.

The Water Park

The Luís Buñuel Water Park is a large public and recreational space legacy of the Saragossa 2008 International Exhibition with green areas, sports facilities, aquatic attractions and leisure areas.

The design of the Water Park is inspired by the theme of water, and includes aquatic elements, such as lakes, canals and fountains.

The park has diverse sports facilities, such as athletics tracks, soccer fields, tennis courts and paddle tennis courts.

In addition to the sports areas, the Water Park offers leisure spaces for the whole family. There are children’s play areas, areas for bike rides and hiking trails.

The Saragossa Aquarium

The Saragossa Aquarium is the largest River Aquarium in Europe. Enjoy a family day among exotic and fun species, get to know the main rivers in the world.
