Stone Bridge

The Stone Bridge is located over the Ebro River and has a length of 225 meters and 7 arches. It will also take you to the Balcón de San Lázaro, where you can get one of the best photographs of the views of the city.

It has been a crucial crossing from Roman times to the present day. Although the current structure is the result of several renovations and reconstructions over the centuries, its origin dates back to Roman times. Its origins date back to the founding of Caesaraugusta, in the 1st century there is already evidence of the existence of a bridge made of stone or wood, which gave access to one of the main entrance gates to the city and allowed the populations of the city to cross northwest of Hispania.

Originally, the bridge was made up of six stone arches that allowed the passage of vehicles and people. However, over the years, the bridge was damaged and destroyed on several occasions due to floods and military conflicts. These events led to the need for repairs and reconstructions at different times in history.

In the Middle Ages, the bridge was expanded and modified, and in modern times further alterations were made to adapt it to the changing needs of the city.

During the 18th century, the bridge was renovated again with a wider, more elegant design incorporating seven arches. Although it is no longer used for vehicle traffic, it remains an important pedestrian route and a popular location for citizens and visitors who wish to enjoy panoramic views of the Ebro River and the surrounding area. For more than nine centuries, the lion has been the emblem of Saragossa as a symbol of strength and power and the four bronze lions have presided over both sides of the bridge since 1991.
