Christmas in Saragossa

It’s already Christmas in Saragossa. It smells like roasted chestnuts and chimney smoke. The mists rise from the river, blurring the lights of the street lamps and garlands. The children stick their noses to the windows of the pastry shops where the nougats and cakes are displayed. The crowd mills around the Christmas market stalls and the intrepid skaters glide in the shadow of the Pilar. Christmas carols sound. Smells like Christmas.

Christmas celebrations in Saragossa

Christmas is one of our most traditional holidays, but like each celebration it adapts to the times and new forms of fun emerge. The traditional Christmas carols and nativity scenes are still essential, but traditions from other countries have come to make their way into our Christmas. Santa Claus lives with the Three Wise Men and Advent calendars are the new preamble to Christmas.
Saragossa bustles during these dates with traditional and new attractions. The streets are packed with people looking for the perfect gift, and children sled through the Plaza del Pilar. Christmas in Saragossa is a spectacle of lights, color and Christmas carols.

Saragossa Christmas Market

In the manner of the traditional Christmas markets of central and northern Europe, the Christmas display is set up in Saragossa. Craft and gastronomy stalls where we can find typical sweets, nativity figurines, handmade toys or clothing for the cold. Naturally we can also have a chocolate with churros or taste a sweet mulled wine.
One of the new traditions that has taken the strongest root in the city.

Ice skating and sledding in the Plaza del Pilar

Sliding on an icy track at the foot of the Pilar towers is a fascinating experience. Suitable for experienced skaters or intrepid newbies, the rink becomes a center of attraction during these dates. A huge slide for sleighs also stands in front of the Goya fountain, and delights the little ones who launch themselves at full speed on pneumatic sleds.

Wishing tree and Santa’s house

Directly from the North Pole, a replica of Santa Claus’s house is installed in the Plaza del Pilar to the delight of the little ones. The mailboxes at the door to deposit the letter are the safest way for Santa Claus to find out about the wishes of the children of the house. For children and adults, the wishing tree stands in front of the town hall and allows us to write down our best wishes for the entire year.

Nativity scenes of Saragossa

The nativity scene is one of the oldest and most beautiful traditions in our city. Many shop windows display their particular version of the birth of the baby Jesus, and some nativity scenes are an attraction in themselves. But the giant nativity scene in Plaza del Pilar is the star these days. Life-size figures, natural trees and plants and the stream with its ferris wheel welcome the most traditional figures and allow us to walk among them as if we were figurines in a nativity scene.

New Year’s Eve bells in Saragossa

In Saragossa the grapes are eaten in front of the town hall. The end of the year cotillion is an exciting moment in the Plaza del Pilar. Twelve bells, twelve grapes and thousands of good wishes for the new year. Music, cava and lots of fun to start the most festive night of the year.

Cavalcade of Kings of Saragossa

The end of the party most desired by children. Their Eastern Majesties walk through the streets of the city with their cohort of pages, jugglers, magicians, acrobats and tightrope walkers. A magical and fascinating show that precedes the most exciting night of the year.
